From the author’s perspective, one
advantage to assimilating to the American culture is that it helped him feel
more at ease among the other American students. While Rodriquez spoke English
in school, as soon as he got home, Spanish became the language of choice. This
had a positive and negative effect on him. By speaking Spanish, he felt safe,
it also helped him preserve his own culture, but as a disadvantage, it yielded
his learning of English.

Another advantage of learning
English is that it helped Rodriquez to achieve many things. He made many
friends, and he felt more comfortable communicating with his peers. His
academic performance also improved. The downside to assimilating and adopting a
public language (English) is that he began to forget the language of his
parents.  According to him, he “no longer
knew what words to use in addressing his parents.”
